Easter with Wray (and Agnes!)

As is now tradition, this past Easter was spent with my pal Wray and her fantastic family in splendid Connecticut. Agnes, who is no stranger on this blog, joined us this year and captured our stomping through the woods.

That wonderful knit crown is by the adroit knitter, Tara-Lynn of Good Night, Day. The toque is a morel mushroom inspired design knit with fairly traded merino wool from Uruguay. It reminds me a little of the toque Andula wears in Loves of Blonde! You can make your own Petawawa toque with one of Tara-Lynn's brilliant DIY knitting kits or, for those of us less nimble fingered folks, buy one made by her (they come in a range of super soft colour options).

See the full Good Night, Day collection here.
All photos by Agnes Thor, thanks Agnes!

37   There she weaves by night and day
38   A magic web with colours gay.
39   She has heard a whisper say,
40   A curse is on her if she stay
41       To look down to Camelot.
42   She knows not what the curse may be,
43   And so she weaveth steadily,
44   And little other care hath she,
45       The Lady of Shalott.

- Tennyson, 1842

My love of The Lady of Shalott began shortly after my love affair with Anne of Green Gables did. In kindergarten I implored classmates to push me while I lay flat on wheeled milk crates, hands crossed over my chest, reciting what slivers of the poem I could remember from Kevin Sullivan's perfection of a miniseries. In middle school I covered my room with Pre-Raphaelite paintings, my favourite always the Waterhouse depiction of doomed Elaine. Even now, you will scarcely find me more animated than when I open my mouth to speak of the romantic poets, authors and painters of the past. Reading this poem still fills my mind's eye with that wonderful untouchable world that once existed so vividly in my imagination and inexplicably is able to move me to tears (which, is a welcome change from my overly stoic disposition. Nice to know I have a bit of water in me, even if it is a horrible bit of Victorian sentimentality). It's perfectly fitting then, as I'm working on my first collection under my own name, to find inspiration in this early love of mine. How this bit of inspiration will manifest in these first designs, well, you will have to wait and see, hehe.

We've been pretty neglectful of our camera collection since the new year began. Landon is busy daily in studio and I've split my days procrastinating by cleaning every closet, cupboard and nook and cranny in the house and working on the new collection. These are the handful of shots we've managed to squeak out with our Contax over the past few months. Scenes from around the house and the neighbourhood.

If I had access to a magic time travelling phonebooth that would allow me to exchange wardrobes, hairstyles, make-up and teeth with a person of my choice I would... not be able to pick just one person! But on that great big list of figures past (who, in this case, are figures present too) Sylvie Vartan would be very near the top!

I nabbed all of these from a wonderful Sylvie Vartan themed tumblr, here. Read about Sylvie here and listen to Sylvie here!

So badly I need this catsuit.

The latest from The Loved One, a bow tie we've cut from a variety of vintage rayon and silk fabrics. One step closer to my Libertine dream outfit.

Things with TLO have been pretty slow moving this year but we're gearing up for some new and exciting changes including a total renovation of our online shop. We're currently on the hunt for an LA based photographer to work and grow with. If wearing, shooting and playing with vintage clothing is something you'd be interested in send me a quick introductory email to info@thelovedone.net! We're fun bosses (even though I only get to boss you around from afar) and you will be filled with so much boozy punch and snacks!

I've just returned home from a whirlwind three weeks away in Arizona and Los Angeles. The shop celebrated it's 2nd anniversary and I had the pleasure of working on a variety of promotional photoshoots for our soon to come new webshop. Not much else to say at the moment as I'm still completely knocked out by a red eye flight home!

I'm pleased, nay, ENTHRALLED, to share our brand spanking new site and shop! It's been a few weeks in the works and after a few sleepless nights (one night that ended at 7am, much to my aged brain's chagrin) is finally ready for browsing, and even better, shopping.

These are a few shots I took of the luminous Tara Violet during my last LA trip. With the Old Pasadena Farmers Market just around the corner we put together a festive photoshoot featuring a handful of our favourite fruity dresses.

We have big plans for our little site, including expanding our own in house collection as well as carrying more independent designers and posting a monthly featured collection with accompanying editorial. I'm looking forward to collaborating with more LA photographers and muses!

Visit our new site here and our new blog here! Let me know what you think!

I'm writing this while tucked into a cozy bed in a Long Island home soon to be sleeping 19 other people, so getting my sleepy peaceful time in while I can! The reason we're stuffing so many bodies into one space is for my dear friend Sam and a short we're filming for her latest collection, set to debut this September fashion week. It seems then, a fitting time to share these photos we took at my dad's home last month. Sam brought up a mix of her current collection (which you can now buy directly from her here) and her forthcoming collection (lil sneaky peek).

TLO, Seychelles & Dear Creatures

The Loved One is teaming up with Seychelles Shoes, Dear Creatures& BC Footwear for a week long sale August 20th-25th with discounts up to 40% off at our shop in Pasadena. I'm popping over to Los Angeles for a few weeks and will be there for our Friday evening event on the 23rd, stop by and say hello! (Preferably earlier in the evening as I hear there will be some sort of campfire cocktail present? Sounds dangerous and delicious.)

I'm sorry this blog has turned into a dumping ground for full rolls of film and shop promotion. I'm not sure what H&L is at the moment or will be moving forward but I do know that I have some sort of unbreakable attachment to this space. I do need some practice in writing though. That last post, while heartfelt, must have sent shivers up the spines of grammar enthusiasts. Heh.

This post features dresses by Dear Creatures, shoes by Seychelles, tops, skirts and odds and ends by The Loved One and crooked teeth by my crap dentist from Men without Hats.

Some behind the scenes shots taken by Landon (when Landon, River God, was not flexing his spear muscles, making out in paradise or playing with my hair). I think I've exhausted "magical" but our week shooting in paradise couldn't have a more fitting adjective. I'm completely ensorcelled by this cast and crew of brilliant women, little women and men. Emily's luminous performance, the perfection of each shot by cinematographer Ashley, Maximilla and Sarah's inspired directing (and Sarah near 8 months pregnant and in the midst of a move) and Sam and Pat, who worked tirelessly, building rafts, cooking for 20+, ensuring those around them were happy, well fed and enthusiastic about their work all while maintaining a sunny disposition throughout, those two especially are a force to be reckoned with. I fell pretty well in love with the whole lot of them!

Many thanks to our beautiful models, Erin Cherry, Sly, Sweetie, Oliver and Momo and to Marci of Lula Mae for lending us her charming bedroom!

The Selby

A few months ago Todd Selby popped in for a second go round our apartment (though this time without the urban outfitter's staging). The pictures are sweet but served as a reminder that it is time to downsize our collections, or rather my collections, of random odds and ends. Since this photo series was released I've rearranged my living room, dresser top and bookshelf. The dolls have been hidden from Pippin (enthusiastic eater of doll hairs) and the out of season lighting has come down. Trying to de-clutter a tiny New York apartment when so much of the clutter has followed me from childhood has been challenging! I have determined in coming months to build an armoire in which I can toss my mountainous pile of dresses, hats, things with eyeballs and shoes, heh, we shall see. It's been four years now in this apartment and it's starting to feel awfully small and Hudson is smiling a great big pearly white smile and summoning with a crooked finger.

The Feline Feeling from The Loved One on Vimeo.
Louisa came for freedom, she came for stardom but she stayed for... The Feline Feeling. Follow Louisa as she meets the right kind of sewing, stealing and stripping gang of cats lead by Renee and Lucille (played by a be-wigged Lucy in her debut role). Cat fights, cat burglars and cat cats come together for the most dramatic picture ever produced. Can you resist...The Feline Feeling?
It was such a pleasure working with this incredible cast and crew who brought to life all our funny fantasies dreamt up over long rag picking days. The lingerie styles worn by "Louisa" (my party name given to creepy creepers) are all items we're working on producing over the next few months and the kitty panty and hat will be available shortly online. Hope you enjoy...The Feline Feeling.
