Hand painted photos by the talented Shae Acopian Detar.

Shae is on the lookout for new faces to shoot in Los Angeles. She's currently casting for a shoot in collaboration with The Loved One. It will be a full day with some travel time (provided, along with food and fun)! I'm envious of the lucky lady who gets to adventure with this one.

Email photos and or blog address if interested to Shae@shaedetar.com.

Thanks!

A few cat clothed drawings from the summer.

Hope my fellow east coasters are warm with friends and family. We've had a full house the last few days and were fortunate enough to keep power throughout. If you'd like to lend a helping hand during this time there are many different ways to do so from little things like donating books and dvds to shelters to working full shifts. Here is a helpful directory for locals who'd like to help. Have a safe and happy Halloween!

This Is Our Youth

A few shots from last Friday when I met up with photographer, Kimi Selfridge. I very much recommend taking a peek at her ongoing project "This Is Our Youth" here!

This is going to be one of my less rambling on like a grandpa posts. Quickly, before I run out of the house to meet up with friends for a chilly night's stew,  I wanted to mention the top in the second photo here. That magnificent lilac hued, bound and be-tasseled thing is now over one hundred years old and I know it is a shame to some people to wear such antiquities but I am not of that party (having taken part in the destruction of many an Edwardian blouse and bedclothes). My gracious Aunt Dot, who boasts a collection so breathtaking it is all on display as though she lives in a (rather condensed) museum, gave me the blouse last Christmas. If you are cringing at my wearing it I will say now that it has not made it out of the house and is kept safe and worn with great care. I realize this is something a mite more special then 100 year old underpants and oh my gosh look at this, a ramble.

Frances Baker & Samantha Pleet

My adult baby brother, Liam, snapped these shots in our courtyard today before we dodged out to pick up Thanksgiving treats for our, now traditional, Thanksgiving parade and potluck. He's not a bad photographer! I'll be sharing soon a collection of breathtaking photos he took while on his two month solo trek across the US.

Not long ago I received the above dress as a gift from Josephine, the talented designer behind Frances Baker. We (The Loved One) began carrying a select number of pieces from her collection earlier this season (including the above dress) and I'm so pleased for it. This summer I spent quite a bit of time in this dress from her s/s collection and have been wearing the fall counterpart with equal enthusiasm. Again, she has managed to pick out the softest and most comfortable fabric to sew her meticulously crafted design. I've paired her dress here with boots made by another exceptionally talented designer, and pal, Samantha Pleet. I've sung the praises of these boots here before but wanted again to say that they are, simply put, the best. So comfortable and so beautiful and also they are red. To top off this all new, all independent outfit (alright, not all, the hat is from my favourite Ottawa vintage shop, Ragtime) is a ring that I tried and failed to photograph (another time). The cat shaped ring was a gift from Calourette via Landon upon returning home from his Paris trip. I don't wear much jewelry apart from my wedding ring but I, like the rest of the internet right now, would happily adorn myself with as much pussy as possible (can't wait for the google searches to bring folks in with that one). Needless to say, this ring is also, simply put, the best. Thank you Calourette, Frances Baker and Samantha Pleet for making me feel so fancy! Friends I implore you, support small this holiday season!

I celebrated my birthday last week (and somehow got away with celebrating it for a whole week ending last night with a candle lit chocolate torte at Vinegar Hill House) and Landon, as he's done for birthdays and anniversaries before, gave me a camera. The most recent addition to our camera family is a fuji instax after I expressed a renewed interest in the instant variety when taking pictures with Kimi. A fitting present as his first gift to me was a polaroid camera back in 2004. Below are a few of the old shots I dug up from the internet graveyard that is livejournal.

The fuzzy shoes (still getting acquainted with this camera, hehe) in the final photo are the TLO x Jacques Levine shoes I wrote about so long ago. They have at last been manufactured and will be available for purchase within this month!

The Winds of Winter

Had a chance to update our neglected website of the same name along with this senescent space! It's a bit cumbersome to navigate at the moment but a few more hours of rambling off a variety of expletives in the manner Joe Pesci in Home Alone 2 should do the trick. You can push the pictures around like you would digging through a friend's old stack of memories, kinda fun I think!

I'm not sure what will come of this space moving forward. This year is going to bring about some big changes and I've got nervous do anything but what I've got to do feelings (which turns me into a marathon TV watcher, updater of forgotten websites, cooker of long meals and scratcher of head while staring blankly at wall). These are good changes though and once I've grown the vagina (way stronger than balls, guys) to make it happen no doubt the floodgates of communication will come swinging open.

Hope the first week of the new year has been kind to you all!

Seemed appropriate, if not a little premature, to share these spring scenes given the unusually balmy (heh, 42) temperatures over here in New York. This colour palette has been haunting me since we visited the Philadelphia Museum of Art for the Visions of Arcadia show this summer. It was a beautiful and transportive show on the theme of earthly paradises that we viewed, fittingly, after eating the best philly cheesesteaks around (it was my first and totally unlike and way better than I expected), another variety of earthly paradise.

I want to wrap myself up in these in an attempt to combat the bleak cement grey haze that's been the city since the holiday's end. How delicious are these colours? Were I a clever blogger I'd have found all sorts of clever ways to incorporate these gloriouscolours into yourowncollections! Alas!

What pick-me-ups are you indulging in this dreary time of year? I recently picked up this handsome Canal House cookbook at Aimee's recommendation and am anxious to try and make my dinners taste as good as those pictures look!

You know when you meet somebody and something just clicks? And when you leave their presence you feel a little better about everything around you, a little spring in your step, a little creepy "I just fell in love" kinda grin on your face? There are a few women that I've had the extraordinary pleasure of getting to know better this last year who have each left me in this blissful state. Shae is one of those women. She's as perfect a companion as I could ever dream up. Unfortunately Shae, along with many of my loves (including my business), lives on the West Coast so our time together is sadly limited. I had the pleasure and the privilege of spending the morning with today and was reminded once again just how dearly I enjoy her company. So here is a post dedicated to her. The modern (and equally creepers) equivalent to shouting from the rooftops your love and admiration!

This is just a small selection of her fantastically gorgeous body of work. You can see her full portfolio here.

This past September my brother Liam embarked on a solo cross country roadtrip. For two months he camped on beaches, up dodgy roads and in open fields and once hiked a pan, bacon and eggs up a mountain for what must have been a most spectacular and rewarding breakfast! His travels brought him from Vancouver, BC down the west coast to LA then onto Arizona, Utah, New Mexico, Texas, Louisiana  Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia and Pennsylvania before settling in New York for a grand total of 8500 miles and 54 days.

Liam faithfully documented his travels and shared them via his envy inducing instagram. This is just a small scattering of my favourite photos he took with a camera borrowed from Landon's mum. I'm urging him to make a blog on which he can share the full collection of his travel photos and will hopefully have that to share with you soon.

Today it is a frigid -9 celsius (which is nothing compared the -25 in my hometown Ottawa) and our Super only just turned on our solo radiator so looking at these pictures is currently serving as an escape from my chilled surroundings! Me and my icicle toes are eager to move into the next season and the adventure it brings.

Samantha's Dress

021_22

Some snow filled photos from our time up north. I borrowed this gorgeous Pre-Raphaelite red velvet dress from Samantha for some festive jogs through snow. These were taken Christmas day when we were treated to a wonderfully warm and sunny afternoon.

Tomorrow, or rather, today as it is now the early early morn and I'm putting off sleep in favor of watching "The Grand" (a nice bit of period soapy goodness) I'm heading off to Phoenix. I'm meeting up with Landon who is driving over after a busy and successful week in LA for the contemporary art fair! Looking forward to desert times, some warmer temperatures and hanging out with Landon's mum's chickens!

Last Monday I was reunited with Landon after his week in LA in sunny and deliciously warm, Arizona. We had three full days to enjoy the welcome heat and spent them visiting the botanical gardens, relaxing with Landon's mum's chickens and climbing up to the best sunset spot in town. Some of my favourite photos we've taken were taken in Arizona, the light and locations are still, after almost 9 years of visiting, so foreign and exciting to my Canadian self.

I think this a rather fitting occasion to share these photos as the city is quickly being covered in a blanket of snow. Welcome to New York fashion week visitors! Hope you brought your Sorels!

I put together a little soundtrack for Samantha's fashion week presentation that you can listen to here (well, a portion of it).

Samantha Pleet is no stranger on this blog and, if you've not yet gathered, I can't sing her praises loud enough. Samantha and her husband and partner, Patrick, are two of a kind and their designs reflect so perfectly their sense of humor, adventure and their creativity. Their latest collection combines rigid architectural lines and flowing movement with garments fit for a Giselle or Ondine. I'm hoping to make that little velvet suit mine come round two of the cold months this year!

MAKE up

I've got this snaggle tooth that is a lot less shy than I am and despite my attempts at pushing it back into fresh post-braces state (very bad, I know) it makes it's presence known a lot more than I'd appreciate. This is one reason I've been a hesitant lipstick wearer over the years (a certain tooth in Mean Girls comes to mind) another being that my very circular mouth tends to look kinda cartoonish when painted. I always end up wiping off my bold lips before letting my tooth do the job. I was recently gifted the darkly hued Beetroot lipstick by MAKE and have actually been wearing it almost daily. My past reservations about lipstick rapidly diminishing with each wear (that and a certain shamelessness that comes as the calendars pile up). Along with the lipstick I received a blush, lip primer and a beautifully packaged pretty pallette of eyeshadows and lipsticks. MAKE is a line I'm looking forward to watching, the socially aware and aesthetically pleasing brand is a breath of fresh air in the cookie cutter beauty department.

In this post I'm wearing Matte Lipstick in Putty, Limoges Pink Blush, Matte Lipstick in Nude, and Silk Satin Lipstick in Beetroot all c/o MAKE.

Also a little glimpse at a skirt made by the wonderful Nadinoo in here!

I love these photos our friend Clement shot of Landon working in his studio last summer. It's neat to see how Landon's work has changed in the last twelve months (the first photo is more recent in which you can see how his compositions have evolved) . Clement's photography is so creamy and soft, a perfect pairing with Landon's swirling dyes.

Hana Haley is an enormously talented young photographer presently working in San Francisco. It was such a pleasure to meet up and show her around my neighbourhood a few weeks ago while she was visiting, a still so chilly, New York.

Each of her photo series tell a story that unfolds in wonderful colour and texture. See more of her work here.
